Michael Schaefer

Bloomington native Michael Schaefer ’07 is the recipient of a Fulbright Grant to conduct archaeological research in Brazil next year.  Schaefer, an anthropology major, worked with Illinois State University faculty, Gina Bessa and James Skibo, both previous recipients of Fulbright Grants to Brazil, and Professor Adriana Dias of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) to develop a proposal for the survey, excavation and laboratory analysis of artifacts from archaeological sites in Itapuã State Park near Porto Alegre.

As part of ongoing collaborations between Illinois State and UFRGS, Schaefer participated in Dias’ 2006 excavation of a prehistoric rock shelter site in Brazil, and Dias and her students visited Skibo’s archaeological field school at Grand Island, Mich.
