It’s time to get the mountain bike out of the garage and dust off those running shoes. The Illinois State University Outdoor Adventure Program and McLean County Department of Parks and Recreation invite you to participate in The 2009 Redbird Challenge Adventure Race on April 19.

The Redbird Challenge is a great opportunity to get outdoors and be active at beautiful Evergreen Lake in Comlara Park. The event consists of a two-mile canoeing section, a six-mile mountain biking section and a three-mile trail running section. Teams of two or four participants must compete as a group in all the sections and cross each of the course’s checkpoints together. There are also several mystery events along the way to keep each team on their toes.

“I’ve got to hand it to the Outdoor Adventure Program, they put on an awesome race. The Redbird Challenge lit a fire under me and I’ve gone on to do overnight and 24-hour endurance races, and it all started at Comlara Park,” said 2008 Redbird Challenge participant Evan Wing.

“The 2009 Redbird Challenge is going to be our best race yet. Last year, the participants asked for more mystery events, and that’s exactly what we are going to give them,” said Pat Meloy, student supervisor of the Outdoor Adventure Program. “We are hoping to get nearly 80 participants.

This is the 5th Redbird Challenge event put on by the Illinois State University Department of Recreation Services in cooperation with the McLean County Department of Parks and Recreation.
