Faculty and staff are invited to attend two Diversity Advocacy sponsored events, “GLBTQIQA Alphabet Soup” and “Shooting Beauty,” which is also sponsored by Disability Concerns.

The “GLBTQIQA Alphabet Soup – What does it all mean?” session will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in 375 Student Services Building. Bring a lunch for this Safe Zone Brown Bag and participate in a roundtable discussion with Tiffany Tiberi, staff psychologist from Illinois State University’s Student Counseling Services. The brown bag discussion is designed for faculty, staff and students at all levels of understanding and experience with GLBTQIQA issues.

Information will be provided to increase participants’ basic awareness of terminology relevant to this community. Additionally, participants will learn about and discuss useful approaches and skills for talking about GLBTQIQA issues. Resources will be shared for participants to gain additional knowledge about the identities and lives of GLBTQIQA people and the allies who support them.

Two film viewings and discussions with the director and producer of “Shooting Beauty – Everyone Deserves a Shot” will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, in 130 Schroeder Hall and at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Bone Student Center Prairie Room.

A picture is worth much more than 1,000 words. “Shooting Beauty – Everyone Deserves a Shot” is an award-winning documentary that tells the inspirational story of an aspiring fashion photographer named Courtney Bent whose career takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a hidden world of beauty at a center for people living with significant disabilities. Shot over the span of a decade, this film puts you in Bent’s shoes as she overcomes her own unspoken prejudices and begins inventing cameras accessible to her new friends. View the film and meet the film’s director, George Kachadorian and producer, Courtney Brent for a conversation about the documentary and their experiences as artists.
