Illinois State University President Al Bowman today announced the appointment of Larry Dietz as the new vice president of Student Affairs effective June 1. Dietz succeeds Steve Adams, who retires on June 1.

Dietz, vice chancellor for Student Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) for the past 10 years, will lead the Division of Student Affairs, which includes the Dean of Students Office, Student Health Services, Student Counseling Center, University Housing Services, Disability Concerns, Career Center, Campus Dining Services, Campus Recreation Services and the University Police as well as other units responsible for co-curricular learning opportunities and programs.

“Dr. Dietz brings to Illinois State a wide spectrum of experiences and outstanding knowledge of student affairs processes in public higher education,” said President Al Bowman. “His successes put him at the top of an impressive list of candidates in a comprehensive national search. I thank search chair Lane Crothers and the entire search committee for their efforts.”

Dietz has served as special assistant to the Chancellor at SIUC and a tenured associate professor in educational administration and higher education. He has led 15 departments and managed a budget of $68 million with more than 500 staff members. Dietz served as the university representative on the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and on boards of other community organizations.

Prior to his tenure at SIUC, Dietz served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, among other leadership positions at the University of Missouri-Kansas City for 15 years, and in leadership positions at Iowa State University for 13 years.

Dietz earned his Ph.D. in higher education administration and his master’s degree in higher education and student personnel from Iowa State University and his bachelor’s degree in political science from Southern Illinois University. He attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University, a Fulbright International Education Seminar for Administrators in Germany and the Harvard Management Development Program.

Dietz was selected to represent the American Universities Iraq Consortium on a panel with Prime Minister Al-Malaki and represented SIUC at the Iraq Education Initiative in Baghdad. He has had responsibility for SIUC’s campus in Japan and has negotiated agreements with institutions in China, Malaysia, Kuwait, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Dietz serves on the Foundation Board of Directors of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, has received their Pillar of the Profession Award, and has been honored by the American College Personnel Association with their Diamond Honoree Award. He received the Virgil Lagomarcino Laureate Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Education at Iowa State University, the Lindell Sturgis Public Service Award from the SIU Board of Trustees and has served as a member of the President’s Board of Trustees for the Illinois Campus Compact for Community Service.
