Two Construction Management student teams participated in the 2011 Associated Schools of Construction Region 3 Student Competitions held in Downers Grove, from October 26–29, 2011.

Students on the design-build team included Alex Brenneman, Leah Doucette,  Josh Genovesi, Amy Pierce, Chase Soderlund, and Corey Watson. Instructional assistant professor Joe Cleary was the faculty advisor and team coach.

Euysup Shim was the faculty advisor and coach for the commercial division team. Students on this team included Ben Troutman (captain), Kevan Carpenter, Kieron Maibusch, Drew Hanlon, David Worker, and Nick May. Twelve schools competed in the commercial division.

Nick May, a commercial division team member summed up the experience this way. “It was a fantastic experience; it tested your construction knowledge, your speaking skills, and your communication and teamwork skills. Dr. Shim had us prepare before the competition, but more importantly he gave us time to get to know one another. Anytime you spend 15 hours straight with a group of people, working together is key. I feel as if I can speak for everyone and that the competition was a great educational experience, great resume builder, and a way to represent Illinois State. The team is going to lose four members to graduation. However, next year two of us will be returning and hopefully can build on what we accomplished this year.”
