Position Title: Systems and/or Networking staff
Company: The Illini Cloud / Bloomington Public Schools
Full time/Part time: Part time
Internship /Temporary/Permanent: Internship

Description:

We are currently looking for a systems and/or networking person. We would even use a programmer who could help in automating our cloud provisioning. One of the projects we have is to install network monitoring software on a virtual machine and configure all of our network devices to be monitored. Depending on the experience of the student we have work that requires assisting IT directors installing disaster recovery software on their production servers.

We also have some wireless evaluations we’d like to do between multiple vendors. This would require setting up 20-50 laptops and simulating normal traffic flows and recording results. Key details are connections per AP and bandwidth used. This information will then be shared out to all 850 school districts in the state.

We are a really easy going team. We support interns taking on their own projects when they have nothing else to do. Testing of technologies like VDI, Openflow, and OpenStack are highly supported. Often there will be tasks of less excitement that involve cleaning the clutter out of the datacenter. Heavy lifting of datacenter equipment would also be required. Normal placement of server chassis and in the worse case (2) Cisco Nexus 7010s that I’ll be putting up in the Dekalb datacenter here shortly.

If we run out of work on the systems side we will loan our intern to the desktop support team. They support about 5000 workstations in the Bloomington Public School system. Duties would be general day to day user tech support.

Required experience would be:

  • Solid understanding of Windows 7
  • Experience with Microsoft office or google docs
  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP

Technical experience in the following would be helpful but not required:

  • VMware ESX
  • Windows Server (all flavors)
  • Linux (all flavors)
  • Cisco IOS, NX-OS, IOS-XE, and IOS-XR
  • SNMP
  • IPsec/SSL VPNs
  • F5 Load Balancers
  • Sripting languages python/perl is a plus, XML
