Students, faculty, and other supporters participated in UNITE’s first Stride for Students 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, August 25, 2012.  The event tipped off on Constitution Trail in Normal near Linden and Vernon Streets.

Organizers say they are always looking for new members and will be on-hand at Festival ISU (August 30, 2012 form 10 am to 4pm) to talk to students interested in urban education.

About the organization:  UNITE (Urban Needs In Teacher Education)
The premise behind UNITE is simple: give urban teachers the time needed to be successful in the classroom. Many teachers with great ambitions and potential leave urban school districts or the teaching professional all together after their first few years in the classroom. UNITE believes that with catered professional development, mentoring and networking, and community immersion events, teachers will be able to overcome the early challenges of urban teaching, stay teaching at their school lowering school teacher mobility rates, and making an invaluable impact on their students and our urban districts.
