Yummy Bars, a Redbird Recipe Winner from 2009, courtesy of student Phil Hizel:

  • 1 package German chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 cup margarine, melted
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 package of caramels (50-60 pieces)
  • 1 can evaporated milk

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Slowly combine cake mix and melted butter in a bowl. The mixture will be crumbly.

Spray a 13×9 pan with cooking spray. Spread 1/2 of the mixture in the bottom of the pan. Bake for 5 minutes and then remove from oven. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the crust.

Melt together caramel and evaporated milk in a double boiler. Stir frequently until melted and smooth.

Pour the melted caramel mixture over the crust and chocolate chops. Spread the remaining cake mixture over the caramel.

Return the pan to the oven and bake an additional 15-18 minutes, or until done. Caramel will be bubbling on the edges. Allow bars to cool before cutting.

Serving: 1 piece, serves 12
