Homework, rowdy roommates, bright lights, work, friends, loud noises — there is a lot that stands between you and sleep.

When you run low on sleep, you can be slow and lack focus—much like a zombie. Illinois State students report sleep as the second highest obstacle to academic success. Sleep is a vital part of your overall well being.

Effects of lack of sleep

In addition to feeling like a zombie, running on little sleep can cause

  • Irritability
  • Slowed response times
  • Decreased decision-making abilities
  • Poor school and/or work performance
  • Weakened immune system
  • Over time can lead to an increased risked for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and obesity.

Tips for better sleep

Below are ways to help you get the seven to nine hours of sleep that your body needs:

  • As much as possible, got to bed and wake up at the same times. This helps your body develop regular sleep patterns.
  • Avoid electronics right before sleep. Watching TV, using the computer and yes, even your cell phone, stimulate your brain and can make falling asleep hard.
  • Reserve your bed for sleeping and not for homework or using your computer. This helps cue your body that bed means sleep.
  • Create a good sleeping environment. Things like temperature, amount of light and noise can stand between you and a good night’s sleep.
  • Have a relaxing bedtime ritual. For some, this may be listening to soothing music, taking a bath or having decaffeinated warm tea. Find what works for you and stick to it.
