The members of Improv Mafia competing in the tournament are Robert Leahy (clockwise, from left), Carlos Kmet, Fiona Stephens, Liz Dillard, Jason Snyder, Kyle McClevey, and Jason Raymer.

Illinois State University’s Improv Mafia took first place in the Lower Midwest Regional competition of the College Improv Tournament February 16 in Indianapolis. The group will go on to compete in the national tournament March 23 in Chicago.

This is the Improv Mafia’s third consecutive Lower Midwest Regional championship.

Illinois State’s Improv Mafia has a powerful national reputation. They took first place in the nation in 2008 and have also placed second (2010) and third (2007 and 2012). Over 125 teams compete in the tournament.

The Improv Mafia has developed their own unique style and improv forms, using an unusual structure—instead of having a coach, each of the members of the Mafia takes a weekly rotation functioning as coach for the group.
