THE DISNEY CONNECTION

The cover story of this issue is all about Disney and the Illinois State students and alumni who make the Magic Kingdom so special. That includes Disney’s global creativity and innovation director, Chris Chapman ’03; senior operations manager of Disneyland Paris, Steve Sulaski ’87; and current students learning the business through Disney College Program internships in Florida. The adventures of the ISU cohort reveal that Disney is an enchanted place, not only for those who come to play but also for the ones who make it their business to deliver those magical moments.

Bone poses on a set

A light-hearted soul, Bone showed his humor posing with a theatre club performance set in 1960.

BOB BONE’S LEGACY

As alumni ponder the legacy of outgoing Illinois State President Al Bowman, it’s the perfect time to look back on the impressive tenure of former President Bob Bone (1956-67). As writer Barbara Sealock notes in her profile of Bone, “the decisions he made during his decade as president positioned Illinois State to become the University it is today.” That includes not only dropping the word “Normal” from the University’s name, but a new direction for campus that led to enrollment growth and physical expansion. The story also includes some great historic shots of the light-hearted Bone, as well as some video.

INSIDE LOOK

New for this issue of Illinois State, we’ve posted a photo gallery of one of our most popular print features, Inside Look. This installment of Inside Look takes you inside the Glass House, a former agriculture building on West Campus that serves as home to Illinois State glass artists. Our photos give you an up-close look at the equipment needed for this amazing craft, and at some of the personalities who make the glass program a hidden game in the College of Fine Arts.

CLASS NOTES

Also for the first time, you can dive into the full version of Class Notes, our ever-popular updates about individual alumni from different decades. We get dozens and dozens of Class Note submissions from our alumni between issues, so now you can find them all online and see what your old classmates are doing these days. And if you’ve never submitted your own Class Note update, you can do that online too.

MISSION REDEFINED

We also have an inspiring story about 2007 public relations graduate Jordan Schupbach, who works for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. His job is to lead outreach efforts for the VA’s national events centered on therapeutic rehabilitation, including the National Veterans Wheelchair Games every summer. “That’s the most rewarding part of my job, to see that transition, from someone who is so closed up from the emotional scars of battle, to move into a position to engage, compete, laugh and struggle in such an open environment,” Schupbach told Illinois State.
