With team members having experienced the difficulties that come with cancer, Illinois State baseball understands the impact supporting cancer research can have on the individuals diagnosed with the disease.

This is why Redbird Athletics will continue to help the cause by hosting Redbirds vs. Cancer at Duffy Bass Field on Sunday, May 5, when the ‘Birds play Creighton at 1 p.m.

The purpose of the event surrounding the game will be to raise funds for childhood cancer through the Vs. Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving kids’ lives by empowering athletes and communities with the hope to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts. Leading up to the event and throughout the game, the ISU baseball team will be raising money for the organization.

To become part of the cause and donate to Illinois State’s fundraising team, visit Illinois State’s Vs-Cancer.org website. Following the conclusion of the game, the entire Redbird baseball team and coaches will shave their heads in support of the efforts of the Redbird Vs. Cancer event.

“We definitely believe in doing our part in giving back to the community and great causes,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “This is a great event that we hope will get a lot of support.”

Vs. Cancer Foundation Founder and CEO Chase Jones created the foundation after being diagnosed and surviving cancer at the age of 18.

“A lot of teams claim they can make a difference, but Illinois State actually is making a difference in the lives of kids battling cancer,” Jones said. “I am thrilled to witness Coach Kingston and the entire program give back to ensure we are doing everything possible to help cure kids’ cancer.”
