With more than 20,500 students, 3,500 employees, and nearly 190,000 alumni, there are bound to be some interesting stats out there when it comes to campus life at Illinois State.

So here at STATEside, we teamed up with the University’s Planning, Research, and Policy Analysis (PRPA) unit to find 10 stats about Illinois State will blow your mind—or at least make you say, “Wow.”

THE OLDEST STUDENT TO EARN AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE LAST YEAR WAS OVER 70; THE YOUNGEST WAS ONLY 19.

THE MOST COMMON BIRTHDAYS OF STUDENTS (AS OF LAST SEMESTER) WERE JULY 17 AND MAY 3—BOTH WITH MORE THAN 80 BIRTHDAYS. THE RAREST ARE FEBRUARY 29, OCTOBER 31, AND JANUARY 1.

STUDENTS FROM 66 COUNTRIES (OUTSIDE THE U.S.) WERE ENROLLED AT ILLINOIS STATE LAST SEMESTER.

THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES CONNECTED TO THE ISU NETWORK IS ABOUT 32,500 PER DAY, WITH MOST (20,000) CONNECTING THROUGH THE WIRELESS NETWORK.

LAST SEMESTER, THE TOP 5 MOST POPULAR UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AT ISU WERE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (5.9 percent of students), SPECIAL EDUCATION (5.8 percent), BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (4.7 percent), MARKETING (3.9 percent), AND ENGLISH (3.6 percent).

BACK 25 YEARS AGO, IN 1987, THE TOP 5 MAJORS WERE ACCOUNTING (7.8 percent of students), ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (7.1 percent), BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (5.9 percent), FINANCE (4.5 percent), AND MARKETING (4.5 percent).

And no, Reggie doesn’t count.

THE LONGEST CONTINUALLY SERVING ISU EMPLOYEE (AS OF LAST SEMESTER) HAS WORKED HERE FOR 46.7 YEARS. AS IF YOU COULDN’T TELL, THAT’S WELL ABOVE THE AVERAGE YEARS OF SERVICE (9.2 YEARS) FOR AN EMPLOYEE.

ILLINOIS STATE HAS EARNED 149 MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN VARIOUS SPORTS, INCLUDING 12 CONFERENCE ALL-SPORTS TITLES. THE REDBIRDS HAVE ALSO EARNED SIX GATEWAY ALL-SPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THERE ARE 30 MILES OF SIDEWALKS ON CAMPUS, AS WELL AS 200 SETS OF OUTSIDE STEPS, THAT HAVE TO BE CLEARED OF SNOW.
