The town of Normal recently approved the installation of new red and white street signs to replace the current green and white signs along Main Street from Raab Road to Hovey Avenue, and along the north part of campus east of Main Street.
“We’re extremely excited to see the town of Normal and the University partner to show off our shared Redbird pride,” said Director of Trademark and Licensing R.C. McBride. “This is a great way to let visitors to town, and campus, know they’ve arrived in Redbird country.”
The signs are being paid for through Illinois State licensing royalties and installed by the town’s public works employees as schedules permit.
“This is really a joint effort. We are able to purchase the signs with no tax dollars, no tuition or student fee dollars – just the royalties recouped from sales of branded items,” McBride said.
The Redbird Pride Committee presented the idea of the sign change to the Normal City Council in June. Installation of the signs began July 9 and will continue throughout the summer. According to McBride, the University plans future signs for other areas of campus.
