Senior track and field standout Brittany Smith was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I men’s and women’s track and field and cross-country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida). She was a third-team selection.

Smith is the 45th Capital One Academic All-American in Illinois State history and the first track and field honoree since Scott Krapf won the award in 2009 and 2011.

The 10-time All-American recently posted two runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships in both the hammer throw and shot put. In the 2012-2013 season alone, Smith notched 35 top-five finishes, including 22 first-place finishes. She started her 2012-2013 campaign by throwing a career-best 70-07 (21.51 meters) in the weight throw at the Redbird Open (December 8) and finished the season with a second-place title at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships (February 24), before winning her first Valley title in the shot put with a mark of 56-09 1/4 (17.30 meters).

On the outdoor circuit, Smith won her first outdoor MVC title in the hammer throw with a mark of 218-10 (66.71 meters), before taking second in the shot put with a throw of 57 1/4 (17.38 meters).
