The documentary series Film and Food for Thought continues with films on Arab stereotypes and India’s call centers.
The next films in the series will be Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night on Thursday, Oct. 31. Both films will be shown at 11 a.m. in the First Floor West Lounge at the Bone Student Center.
Sponsored by the Office of International Studies and Programs, Women’s and Gender Studies and AsiaConnect, the series is free and open to the public. Reel Bad Arabs takes a devastating tour of the American cinematic landscape, moving from the earliest days of silent film to today’s biggest Hollywood blockbusters to reveal an astonishing pattern of slanderous Arab stereotyping.
In Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night, filmmaker Sonali Gulati explores complex issues of globalization, capitalism and identity through a witty and personal account of her journey into India’s call centers. Gulati, herself an Indian immigrant living in the U.S., explores the fascinating ramifications of outsourcing telephone service jobs to India – including how native telemarketers take on Western names and accents to take calls from the U.S., U.K. and Australia. The film will be introduced by Professor Kim Pereira of the School of Theatre and Dance.
