The New Employee Orientation Team is finalizing plans to implement changes beginning in January 2014.

The goal of the team is to enhance the experience of new employees, giving them a greater sense of connection to the University, pertinent information they need without overloading them on their first day, and exposure to more fellow staff throughout the process.

The team is recommending a two-part orientation, which includes the customary half-day benefits orientation and a new, half-day university orientation. In addition, the team is recommending an optional reception hosted by Human Resources (HR) each quarter to give new employees an opportunity to reconnect with the other employees they meet throughout the process and to meet HR staff.

The traditional Monday morning benefits orientation is being revised to include additional information about opportunities available to employees. Facilities Management and Parking Services will continue to participate to offer expedited key distribution and parking permit registration. In addition some benefits will be covered in much greater detail during this portion of orientation.

The new half-day, once-a-month university orientation is being developed for all new employees hired in the month. This session will feature speakers from each division and highlight all the great things being done on campus. A new video will include student testimonials on the impact faculty and staff members have on their experience as well as a welcome from President Timothy J. Flanagan.

A new feature will be a suggested departmental orientation checklist that will be distributed each time a new employee is hired. The checklist will provide an overview of information that is not covered in detail in the centralized orientation process. Departments will be able to easily modify the checklist to include items specific to their area.

Future development includes a new website/portal to provide new employees the opportunity to complete more paperwork online and access all the orientation presentations and handouts.

Members of the New Employee Orientation Team are:

  • Sarah Evans, Human Resources
  • Cheryl Fogler, Planning, Research, and Policy Analysis
  • Kristie Kowall, Facilities Management
  • Julie Jenson, Human Resources
  • Danielle Lindsay, Office of the Provost
  • Danielle Miller-Schuster, Student Affairs
  • Mark Walcott, University Advancement and Foundation

That sounds great! If you are new to the area, that is a great way to have employees start.
