There’s no doubt that students participating in internships find it easier to get hired than those who do not.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers 2012 Student Survey, 55 percent of college graduates surveyed had an internship or a cooperative education experience, and of those respondents, 63 percent of those with a paid experience received a job offer.

But having internships and professional practice experiences don’t just benefit the student. In fact, employers receive many benefits from having interns as well:

  • A source of highly motivated preprofessionals to meet the company needs year-round
  • New perspectives and insight to company problems and challenges
  • Increased visibility of the organization on campus, providing a recruiting edge and greater relationships with career services and faculty
  • Quality candidates for temporary or seasonal positions and projects
  • Freedom for professional staff to pursue more creative projects
  • A flexible, cost-effective workforce not requiring a long-term employer commitment
  • A proven, cost-effective way to recruit and evaluate potential employees
  • An enhanced image in the community as it contributes its expertise to the educational environment
  • Increased diversity of its employees
  • An ability to identify potential future hires, a pipeline for candidates
  • An opportunity for supervisory experience for developing employees
