Diversity makes an institution stronger.  Illinois State University will host a speaker to offer guidance on engaging diverse populations in higher education.

 

Shaun Harper, associate professor and executive director of the Center for the Study of Race & Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a talk titled Making Engagement Equitable: Effectively Engaging Diverse Undergraduate Student Populations at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center.

 

The event, sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, is free and open to the public. The talk is part of the Speaker Series of Illinois State University.

 

Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research explores race and gender in higher education, black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement.

 

The author of 11 books, his works include Student Engagement in Higher Education and College Men and Masculinities. He is editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Race and Racism in U.S. Higher Education, and an editorial board member for the Journal of Higher Education and the American Educational Research Journal. With more than 80 academic publications to his name, Harper’s research has appeared in such works as The Journal of Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, Review of Research in Education and Teachers College Record.

 

Harper has been honored by the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2008 Early Career Award), the American Educational Research Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the American College Personnel Association.

 

Harper earned his bachelor’s degree from Albany State in Georgia, and his Ph.D. in higher education from Indiana University. He previously served as executive director of the Doctor of Education Program at the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education.
