The Illinois State University National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) competition team placed 10th at a national competition in February in Las Vegas. The students representing Illinois State were Jeff Banka, Jason Brown, Lindsey Jungk, Eric Pavilon, and Kevin Tuckey. The team was coached by Professors Rick Boser and David Mallery, M.S. ’10.

Competitors were asked to develop a financially feasible proposal to develop a 60-acre tract in Aurora, Colorado. Proposals were submitted to a group of construction company executives who acted as judges. During the convention, students defended their proposals to the judges in front of an audience.

Illinois States University’s proposal was admired for the students’ unique approach. The planned development centered on equestrian-oriented amenities, serving 23 premier residential lots. The comprehensive market analysis focused on equestrian owners desiring open space trails on adjacent lands. A complete development plat, product designs, financial planning estimates, and planned project management initiatives supported the proposal fully.

“I am very pleased with the results,” Mallery said. “Our students came up with the concept, dug their heels in, and produced a quality proposal. Having the opportunity to speak to equestrian professionals really strengthened the proposal.”

Pavilon received the NAHB Outstanding Student Award for Illinois State’s team. Mallery’s nomination noted Pavilon’s skill, leadership, and dedication to the project.

“The support of our local professionals and Bloomington-Normal Association of Homebuilders has been greatly appreciated over the years” Mallery said. “Without the financial support of the organization, it would have been difficult for our students to experience this great opportunity.”

Members of the local association were able to watch the presentation and expressed their excitement about the proposal. Other financial grants came from the National Housing Endowment.

The NAHB Student Chapters Residential Construction Management Competition (RCMC) was one of the highlights of the 2014 International Builders’ Show.
