Each semester the Career Center assists with professional practice/internship opportunities by cultivating working relationships with faculty internship coordinators from academic departments and employers who recruit Illinois State University students as interns.
Listed below are just a few highlights so far for this academic year:
Ungson-Walbert named internship manager
The Career Center is pleased to announce that Debbie Ungson-Walbert has been appointed as the department’s internship manager. In this newly created position, Ungson-Walbert will serve as the primary resource for information to external and internal constituents regarding internship opportunities and trends; and works with grant administration in Employer Relations.
Internship fairs
The Career Center is hosting its Fall Internship Fair September 17 in the Bone Student Center, connecting employers with students interested in applying for their internship opportunities. The Spring Internship Fair is scheduled for February 10 in the Bone Student Center. Before each fair, students can connect with Career Center career advisors for internship preparation and advice.
Professional practice/internship postings
Students can identify and apply for internships and professional practice experiences using the Career Center job posting system, Hire-a-Redbird, which can be accessed from the Career Center website.
Professional Practice/Internship Coordinator Information Session Breakfast
In the spring, a Professional Practice/Internship Coordinator Information Session Breakfast will be held for internship coordinators at Illinois State to network and share ideas. An invitation to the spring 2015 session will be sent to coordinators soon.
Liability insurance coverage
More employers are requiring professional liability insurance coverage for students who will be participating in internships with their businesses and organizations. The Career Center assists professional practice/internship coordinators with Illinois State University’s Risk Management Office to provide this insurance for students. For more information about liability insurance for students registered in “98” courses, contact Debbie Ungson-Walbert.
Illinois Cooperative Work Study Grant
Illinois State University participates with the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) in implementing the Illinois Cooperative Work Study Grant. A major purpose of the grant is to expand opportunities and increase the number of external work sites where students may pursue internships. The grant is administered through the Career Center and allows reimbursements to employers of up to 50 percent of what an intern registered in professional practice (98) courses are paid. Since grant funding is limited, interested employers should contact Debbie Ungson-Walbert as early as possible.
