Former Redbird standout thrower Brittany Smith posted third-place finishes in the women’s hammer throw and shot put competitions August 15 at the Pan American Sports Festival in Mexico City, Mexico.

Smith tossed a mark of 17.60 meters (57-09) in the shot put. The Oak Park native held the best mark of the United States competitors, while the first-place finisher launched a mark of 17.96 meters (58-11.75). In the women’s hammer throw competition, Smith heaved a mark of 69.50 meters (228-0) for another bronze medal. Former Missouri Valley Conference rival and U.S.A. team member Gwendolyn Berry (Southern Illinois) won the competition with a toss of 72.04 meters (236-04).

Smith was a 10-time All-American at Illinois State, holding both the Illinois State women’s shot put and hammer throw records at 17.92 meters (58-09.50) and 68.01 meters (224-09). She currently works as the director of operations for the University track and field team.
