As a college senior, I feel it is my duty to impart my wisdom on those who are in the position I was four years ago. I have learned and changed so much throughout my college experience, and I could not be happier with where I am now, but there are a few things I wish I would have known.

Here is what I would tell my freshman self:

1. TALK TO PEOPLE IN CLASS

Going to class is so much more enjoyable when you have friends to talk to. It also helps you stay on the ball because trust me, you will want study buddies. Asking questions and sharing notes is the best way to get through those study sessions.

2. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

Your GPA actually does matter, and the best way to keep it up is to go to class. Your mom has probably told you this a million times, and it’s true. You’re here to go to school, so make it your first priority.

3. TALK TO YOUR PROFESSORS

Professors have designated office hours to meet with students for a reason. They love getting to know their students and helping with class material. Also, they are excellent resources, and you will benefit by getting to know them.

4. GET INVOLVED

Join anything and everything that you are interested in. It’s a great way to meet people who like the same things you do, and it will look really good on your resume. Don’t completely overwhelm yourself, but now is the time to try out a bunch of things and see what’s a good fit for you.

5. DON’T LOOK LIKE A BUM EVERY DAY

Getting ready for the day puts you in the school mindset and helps wake you up. I’m not saying wear a suit to class, but just take the time to maybe brush your hair and look presentable.

6. CALL HOME

Living away from home for the first time is probably harder on your parents than it is on you. Call them every now and then so they know that you’re OK. Trust me, they will appreciate it.

This is my advice to my freshman self, but I hope it helps you too. In the next four years, you will create your own path and learn your own lessons. No matter what, make the best of your time at Illinois State.
