Diversity Advocacy has launched its most recent initiative, Cultural Immersion Trips, which immerses students in a daylong cultural experience. The trips focus on attending an exhibit, museum, or event, followed by discussion and reflection. This is a great opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zone, explore something new and connect with other students.

The first Cultural Immersion Trip was held October 18. Students traveled to the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. Students spent the day exploring the museum and then enjoyed authentic cuisine at a local Mexican restaurant. At the end of the trip, students reflected on their experiences at the museum.

Elise Robertson, a trip participant, benefited greatly from this experience. Not only did she learn about Mexican culture, but she also felt “enlightened” by the reflection that followed the museum visit.

Robertson was excited to share her experiences with friends when she returned to Illinois State. “It was a day spent learning new perspectives and more about a culture one is not typically exposed to,” she said.
