Elizabeth Barkley, author, scholar, musician, and educator, will be the keynote speaker at “Next Steps in Student Engagement,” the 2015 University-Wide Teaching & Learning Symposium. Barkley is the author of Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty. In this book she shares ideas for engaging students in a wide variety of disciplines. Barkley also addresses how faculty can effectively involve students in small group work that promotes learning.

In addition to her luncheon keynote, Barkley will conduct a morning workshop and a post-lunch discussion session. She will share ideas on how college faculty can improve the quality of classroom learning and the effectiveness of their teaching. She will focus on helping faculty identify solid, practical, and effective strategies and techniques for promoting student engagement in their varied teaching contexts. She will also share a model for defining and understanding student engagement in today’s university classroom.

The 2015 University-Wide Teaching & Learning Symposium will be held Wednesday, January 7, at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Uptown Normal. It is free to attend for all faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants on campus, but registration is required before December 17, 2014.
