This spring’s International Seminar Series focuses on the theme of global learning and what this topic means for Illinois State University.

The seminar series is held from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through April 22 either in the Prairie Room Center or in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center. Attendees are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to enjoy the provided refreshments. This series is free and open to the public.

On February 11, Professor Dawn Beichner from the Department of Criminal Justice Sciences, Professor Erin Mikulec from the School of Teaching and Learning, and coordinator Mayuko Nakamura from the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) will present “Global Learning at Home:  Ways to Internationalize Our Courses.”

On February 18, Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, the Mexico site director for Augsburg College’s Center for Global Education, will present “Study Abroad Location Possibilities: Experiential Learning, Critical Thinking, and Global Citizenship.”

On February 18, Lutterman will also present a faculty/staff workshop on “Fostering Student Learning Outcomes in Your Study Abroad Programs” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 212 Fell Hall. Registration through CTLT is required for this event.

On February 25, Hilary Khan, the director of the Center for the Study of Global Change at Indiana University, will present “Diversity in the Classroom: How International Students and Scholars Contribute to Global Learning.”

On March 4, Darla K. Deardorff, executive director of the Association of International Education Administrators, will present “Regional Approaches to Global Learning:  A Comparative Perspective.”

On March 4, Deardorff will also present a faculty/staff workshop on “Developing and Assessing Intercultural Competence” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in 103 Instructional Technology and Development Center. Registration through CTLT is required for this event.

On March 18, a panel of coordinators from the area studies programs at Illinois State University, will present “Global Learning and Area Studies: What are the Connections?”

On March 25, a panel of Illinois State alumni who recently served in the Peace Corps and staff from the Stevenson Center will present “On Leadership: Social Responsibility and Global Engagement.”

On April 1, Suzanne Fry, director of the National Intelligence Council’s Strategic Futures Group, will present “Education for a Global Century: World Megatrends and their Implications.”

On April 8, Illinois State University President Larry Dietz will present “Global Learning in the Co-curriculum.”

On April 15, Karen Pashby, postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research at the University of Alberta, will present “Global Citizenship on the International Agenda: Mobilizing a Critical Approach.”

On April 15, Pashby will also present a faculty/staff workshop on “Global Citizenship and Critical Literacy: Tools for Educators” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 212 Fell Hall. Registration through CTLT is required for this event.

On April 22, Maria Schmeeckle, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Luis Canales, director of the Office of International Studies and Programs, will present “So What? Does Global Learning Matter?”
