The Metcalf Mandarin class participated in the Bloomington-Normal Chinese New Year Celebration held at the Bone Student Center on February 8.

This event was co-sponsored by Illinois State University, Heartland Community College, and State Farm Insurance.

The Metcalf Mandarin students participated in several performances in the celebration, such as the Chinese rhythm song, Chinese children activities (Chinese yo-yo, Chinese jump rope, Chinese hacky sacks, and two men jump rope), and the Chinese fashion show.

Some Mandarin students also sang a Chinese song and hosted the celebration. Three violinists from the Metcalf orchestra played the Chinese song “My Motherland” together with an Illinois State music graduate student. Metcalf musicians also played in the celebration.

In attendance at the celebration were the mayor of Normal, the director of Illinois State’s Office of International Studies and Programs, the coordinator of ISU International House, the operations vice president of State Farm Insurance, the chair of Heartland Community College’s board of trustees, and the principal of Thomas Metcalf School.
