William D. Gilliland, an assistant professor in the department of biological sciences at DePaul University, will present some of his research on the dynamics of chromosome segregation in flies. His presentation, Why Four? The Role of the Drosophila Melanogaster Dot Chromosome in Female Meiosis I will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. in Moulton Hall, room 210 on Thursday, March 26.

Presentation abstract
During meiosis, accurate chromosome segregation is essential. Meiotic recombination is usually sufficient for this, but non-recombinant chromosomes can still segregate accurately by a backup system. This talk will describe the mechanisms that segregate nonexchange chromosomes, and their implications for genome structure.
