As a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Kathryn Clancy, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present Signaling Safety: How to Create Positive Work Environments at Scientific Field Sites on April 28 at 2 p.m. in Schroeder Hall, Room 206.

A survey of over 600 scientists demonstrated that scientists are harassed and assaulted in fieldwork settings: In this sample, female trainees were most vulnerable to harassment, and codes of conduct and reporting mechanisms were rare and largely unsatisfactory (Clancy et al. 2014: PLOS ONE). In this presentation, Clancy will support these results with a thematic analysis of 26 interviews, demonstrating the qualitative differences in types of discrimination and harassment faced, the types of workplaces more prone to harassment, and the effects a hostile work environment can have on a scientist’s career. From there, she will offer directions for the kinds of settings that create positive, transformative experiences that enhance productivity and scientist retention.

Clancy received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University. Her work has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Women & Aging, Biopsychosocial Medicine, and the Journal of Human Biology.
