Summer Institute Kickoff 2015
Tuesday, May 12 • 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
Turn in your grades and then come celebrate the end of the spring semester with a few slices of pizza and a dollop of professional development. The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology’s Summer Kickoff 2015 starts Tuesday, May 12, at 11 a.m. Stop in and stay for as long as you can. No registration is necessary.
University Teaching Award Portfolio Circle
Wednesday, May 13 • 12–2 p.m.
Have you been nominated for a University Teaching Award? Congratulations! This portfolio circle will help you learn more about building a teaching portfolio that follows the guidelines provided by the University Teaching Committee. No registration is necessary.
(Re)Create Your Gen Ed Course
Monday, May 18 • 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
Designed especially for faculty teaching General Education courses in 2015–16, this series of four workshops will provide an opportunity to meet colleagues teaching in the program, review the revamped General Education program, create key course materials, and share work with others. This cohort will also participate at the Course Design Showcase on August 5, 2015 at the Alumni Center. Please note: Due to limited seating you will be automatically waitlisted for this cohort, but will be notified when you are actively registered. This workshop meets on May 18, May 20, and May 22, and June 1 but you only need to register for the May 18 session.
Coaching for Excellence
Monday, May 18 • 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Explore coaching principles that support student motivation and autonomy. We will examine strategies and develop techniques inspired by coaching skills to help students become more engaged and self-directed. You will design learning experiences that support flow and autonomous learning. Facilitator: Jim Broadbear. Registration is required.
Design Your Course
Tuesday, May 19 • 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
This workshop is designed for faculty in their first, second or third year of teaching at Illinois State University. By the conclusion of the summer, each participant will have designed a course that she or he will be teaching for the first time during the fall 2015 or spring 2016 semester. The workshop will guide participants through a course design process that draws on the work of teaching and learning scholars Dee Fink and Ken Bain. This cohort will also participate at the Course Design Showcase on August 5, 2015, at the Alumni Center. Note: This workshop meets from 9-12 on May 19, May 21, May 26, June 2, June 4, and June 9, but you will only need to register for the May 19 session.
Introduction to ReggieNet

Get a complete tour of the Illinois State learning system and its popular tools. Gain valuable ideas about ways to enhance your students’ learning experience. You will leave this workshop with the basic skills to add learning materials, activities, and assessments to your individualized ReggieNet course site. Registration is required.
Lead a Study Abroad Program
Tuesday, May 19 • 1–4 p.m.
Use the entire world as your classroom! Give your students the opportunity to obtain and sharpen critical intercultural skills. This afternoon workshop, facilitated by the Office of International Studies and Programs, will present an overview of the study abroad process and its foundational concepts. You’ll learn about the factors to consider when developing a program and become familiar with learning outcomes specific to study abroad. Explore the responsibilities associated with being a faculty director and learn what it takes to develop your own study abroad program. Please bring the syllabus of the course you are considering leading abroad. No registration is necessary.
Learning Activities and Assessment for the Flipped Classroom
Wednesday, May 20 • 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Flipping course content can help facilitate powerful, student-centered learning. This method of teaching requires that students prepare for class by reading material or watching videos or recorded lectures in advance. This allows class time to be used for applying that knowledge in meaningful ways. Assessment needs to play an important role in this type of teaching. In this session, we will explore a variety of teaching strategies, based on Universal Design for Learning, which we can use in our flipped classrooms and methods for assessing student learning. Registration is required.
ReggieNet Assessments
Thursday, May 21 • 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
This workshop will cover the assessment tools available in ReggieNet, including Tests & Quizzes, Assignments, and File Drop. Explore the options available for different types of assessment, the limitations of the assessment tools, and instructional strategies for promoting academic integrity. Prerequisite: Introduction to ReggieNet. Registration is required.
