College of Education Dean Perry Schoon has been named one of the most influential education deans in the country.
Dean Perry Schoon has been named to the ranking of “The 30 Most Influential Deans of Education in the United States” by Mometrix, the national test preparation company.
For the award, researchers analyzed factors including state and national awards and honors, education program rankings, individual degree program rankings, and even the level of pay received by graduated teachers from the schools.

Schoon, who holds the number 12 spot on the list that includes deans from Vanderbilt University and the University of Michigan, was appointed dean of the College of Education in May 2012. Since his arrival, the special education program was ranked the fourth best of its kind in the country by the National Council on Teacher Quality, and Niche.com named the college’s middle school education program as the 10th best in the United States. The ranking also referred to College Factual’s 2013 Top 10 list containing the best colleges of education in the country that placed Illinois State at number eight.
“Dr. Schoon is a national leader on education policy whose work carries on the tradition of excellence at the College of Education,” said Provost Janet Krejci.
An Illinois State alumnus, Schoon earned a bachelor’s degree in technology and a doctorate in education at Illinois State. His research has been published in both the International Journal of Learning and the Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia. He served in various positions at West Carolina University, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Texas at Arlington before coming to Illinois State.
