There are so many myths about finding an off-campus apartment, many of which can be overwhelming for a student looking to move off campus. Staff members from Leadership and Community Connections in the Dean of Students Office work to dispel these myths so that students feel informed and comfortable during their search process.

Myth #1: You have to sign a lease in October or you’ll have no place to live next school year.
Fact: There are plenty of apartments and time to find a place to live. Don’t be pressured by friends or leasing companies. That could result in a poor decision with serious financial consequences.

Myth #2: You can’t use financial aid to pay for your apartment.
Fact: Many students use their financial aid to pay for rent, utilities, or even groceries.

Myth #3: You don’t need to read a lease before you sign it.
Fact: A lease gives you a lot of important information. There are staff members in the Dean of Students Office who can help you understand your lease before you sign it.

Myth #4: If I sign a lease, I can cancel it if I change my mind later.
Fact: A lease is a legally binding document. Once it is signed, there is no way out of it. Be certain before you sign, as there are financial risks.
