Due to safety reasons, hover boards (battery-operated self-balancing scooters) are not permitted anywhere in Illinois State University housing and dining facilities, effective immediately.

“University Housing Services worked with Illinois State’s Environmental Health and Safety office and the Association of Residence Halls in deciding to issue this regulation,” said Brent Paterson, interim vice president for Student Affairs. “There have been a number of cases in the U.S. of hover boards overheating and catching fire while plugged into an outlet to recharge the battery. They can also be dangerous if students are riding them in hallways and public areas.”

Residents in University residence halls and apartments will have until Wednesday, February 10, to remove hover boards from those facilities. After that deadline, possession or operation of a hover board in residence halls or dining facilities will result in a policy violation citation and a referral to the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution office.

Hover boards are still permitted on public sidewalks on the Illinois State campus and operators are cautioned to obey all traffic laws and be mindful of pedestrians.
