Andrew Hartman, HIS, presented the keynote address at a conference on Les Guerres Culturelles aux États-Unis (Culture Wars in the United States) at the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis in Nice, France.

Ali Riaz, POL, participated in a panel entitled, “Erosion of Secularism in Bangladesh” held at the University of California Berkeley in November. The panel was organized by the Institute of South Asian Studies, and the Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies. He also presented “Constructing and Reproducing ‘Others’: Discourse about Muslim Sects Among Deobandi Ulema in Bangladesh” at the workshop Islam and Its Divisions in South Asia, held at Princeton University, organized by the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies Program in South Asian Studies.

Julie Derden, MIL, Sarah French, MIL, and Sherry Sanden, COE, presented “Supporting Preservice Teachers as Readers and Teachers of Readers: A Cross-Campus Collaboration to Promote Learning about and with Children’s Literature” at the 2015 National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention in Minneapolis.

Readings and Performances
Francesco Levato, ENG, took part in The Open Door Readings of the Poetry Foundation in November. The series presents work from Chicago’s new and emerging poets and highlights the area’s outstanding writing programs. Levato presented with his student Benjamin Busch.

Paul Nolen’s, MUS, ensemble, the Iridium Quartet, performed “Peregrinations in Praise of The One Who Observes the Sounds of the World” by Carl Schimmel, MUS, in September. Schimmel’s work “Roadshow for Thora” was premiered by the SOLI Chamber Ensemble. His composition “The Moon Rabbit Syllabary” for flute, viola, and harp was also premiered by Trio Kavak, in New York City at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music.

Logan Miler, ANT, published “Ritual Economy and Craft Production in Small-scale Societies: Evidence from Microwear Analysis of Hopewell Bladelets” in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology.

T.Y. Wang, POL, published a co-authored study entitled “Presidential Approval in Taiwan: An Analysis of Survey Data in the Ma Ying-jeou Presidency” in Electoral Studies.

Honors
Archana Shekara, ART, was named as the new president of the McLean County India Association at the MCIA’s annual banquet.

Rose Marshack and Rick Valentin, MUS, had their first two records/cassettes, released under the name Poster Children in 1988, re-released as limited edition tape cassettes by Grabbing Clouds Records in honor of International Cassette Store Day.
