Kris Varjas, director of The Center for Research on School Safety, School Climate, and Classroom Management at Georgia State University, will be the keynote speaker for the 19th Annual School Psychology Institute at Illinois State University on Monday, April 18.

Varjas, a professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State, will present the workshop “Unpacking culture and assessing our practice: Legal and ethical issues,” from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Illinois State’s Alumni Center, 1101 N. Main in Normal.

The workshop is free and open to the public, but to ensure adequate space, reservations are required by Monday, April 11. Attendees should contact Steven Landau at selandau@ilstu.edu to make a reservation.

Varjas’s workshop presentation will address practice and cultural competency issues facing mental health professionals working in ethnically and culturally diverse school settings. Practical attention will be paid to legal and ethical issues when working within diverse school settings.

The School Psychology Institute is hosted by Illinois State’s Department of Psychology and graduate program in school psychology.
