Bring new perspectives and powerful student learning to your teaching. Registration is now open for summer course design workshops, offered through the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology’s Summer Institute. These multiple-day workshops help you develop instructional skills with a stable cohort of colleagues.

(Re)Creating Your Gen Ed Course: Designed especially for faculty teaching General Education courses in 2016–2017, this series of four workshops will provide an opportunity to meet colleagues teaching in the program. Review the General Education program as a whole, including key elements and outcomes. Create course materials that align with targeted program outcomes. Facilitated by Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education Jonathan Rosenthal and Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) Director Claire Lamonica.

Reinvent Your Course for Diversity: Explore ways to modify your course content to meet the needs of Illinois State’s diverse population of learners. This workshop helps you create a more inclusive learning environment and a more nuanced, thoughtful understanding of cultural issues, for both you and your students. Facilitated by Mayuko Nakamura and Dana Karraker, coordinators at CTLT.

Design Your Course: For faculty in their first three years of teaching at Illinois State, this workshop will help you plan and implement a course you will deliver in either the fall of 2016 or the spring of 2017. It draws extensively upon research-based best teaching practices from several nationally recognized educators, such as Ken Bain (What the Best College Teachers Do) and Dee Fink (Creating Significant Learning Experiences). Facilitated by CTLT Director Claire Lamonica.

Going Global with Your Course: Bring a global perspective to your course by becoming familiar with the books, websites, organizations, and technological tools on the topic. You will explore paradigms shaping the internationalization of higher education and how these have been conceptualized and operationalized. Facilitated by Maria Schmeeckle, of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Mayuko Nakamura, of CTLT.

(Re)Design Your Course for Civic Engagement: This workshop series gives you the opportunity to integrate civic engagement into your course and have that course included as part of Illinois State University’s civic engagement minor. This summer, 15 participants will be chosen from among all applicants. Applications must be received by Friday, April 22. Facilitated by Cynthia Edmonds-Cady, of the School of Social Work; Kyle Miller, of the School of Teaching and Learning; and Dana Karraker, of CTLT.

Registration is required. Stipends are available for eligible participants in these workshops, ranging from $500 to $1,000.  For meeting dates, learning objectives, and registration information, check out CTLT’s Summer Institute website.
