Week of August 1: Your Classroom Tech Policy, Summer Showcase

Professionals pose in a classroom

Talk technology policy in the classroom and stop by our Summer Showcase, this week at CTLT!

Explore the best ways to deal with distracting devices in your class. Plus, don’t miss out on innovative ideas and presentations by fellow faculty members and staff during the Summer Showcase!

Most workshops at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology require registration at least one business day in advance. Workshops are held at CTLT’s facilities at 301 S. Main unless otherwise noted.

Your Classroom Technology Policy
Tuesday, August 2 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Research shows that students respond better when instructors set clear guidelines about the use of mobile technology, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones, in the classroom. But you don’t have to resign yourself to teaching in spite of digital distractions. Discover ways to collaborate with students at the start of the semester to create agreement over what is, and is not, the appropriate use of technology in your classroom. Registration required.

About.IllinoisState Websites for Faculty and Staff
Tuesday, August 2 • 2–3 p.m.
Stevenson 107

Showcase your teaching, research, and service using your own, customized University webpages. About.IllinoisState is a browser-based way to create webpages. No additional software is required. This workshop is open to faculty and staff only. Registration required.

Excel: Level 2
Wednesday, August 3, 2016  • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This course continues the basics of creating and modifying charts that began in Excel: Level 1. Also explore useful tools like filtering, which make viewing data accessible at a glance, and pivot tables to summarize values. Registration required.

Clickers: Introduction
Thursday, August 4 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Clickers are audience-response devices which allow instructors to poll a face-to-face class in real time, displaying the results, and engaging students in their learning. Responses can be recorded and incorporated into grades in ReggieNet. This workshop is designed for those who have not used clickers before at Illinois State and wish to incorporate this powerful technology into their classes starting in the fall. You will explore the latest, cloud-based polling system from TurningPoint, the official vendor for campus. Those already using clickers should instead take the alternate workshop, Clickers: Transition to TurningPoint Cloud. Registration required.

CTLT Summer Showcase 2016
Thursday, August 4 • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Alumni Center

This summer, hundreds of faculty members will discover new ways to enrich the educational journey of Illinois State students through the CTLT Summer Institute. Join us Thursday, August 4, to see some of these innovative ideas and how your fellow instructors will put them into practice. All members of the campus community are welcome to stop by the Alumni Center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Registration is only required by August 1 if you plan to join us for lunch between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
