In the following Q&A, Heather Phillips, nontenure-track professor Heather Phillips, shares some of her experiences in the Department of Philosophy at Illinois State University.

What got you into philosophy?

After working for a number of years, I decided to begin graduate work in philosophy after completing a M.A. in bioethics. However, during my doctoral program, I began to focus more on epistemology, writing my dissertation on control of belief.

What are your philosophical interests?

My philosophical interests range from epistemic practice and responsibility to genetic interventions and counseling to moral and epistemic justification.

Where are you from originally?

I grew up in rural Ohio about 20 miles north of Dayton. Most recently, I lived in Houston.

What do you like to do outside of philosophy?

When I’m not working, I enjoy cycling, watching movies, and reading. When I have the opportunity, I love to travel, hike, and ski.
