Does any of this sound familiar? Being a college student is stressful! You don’t have to go it alone. Student Counseling Services (SCS) is here to help you succeed.

There is strength in using available resources. Counseling is a collaborative process that builds on your strengths and helps develop strategies to manage the challenges.

SCS is staffed with experienced professional psychologists and counselors. It is free and it’s confidential.

Making an appointment is easy. Call (309) 438-3655 or stop by the office at 320 Student Services during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Same-day appointments are available for emergencies.

During your initial appointment you will meet with one of our professional staff who will talk with you about your concerns and challenges. Together you will decide on which  services will be most helpful in meeting your needs. SCS offers a variety of services. Many students benefit from short-term structured groups manage anxiety or depression are offered throughout the year.

Group therapy is one of the most effective treatment options for young adults. Our groups meet for an hour and a half a week and run throughout each semester. Group therapy can be useful in improving relationships and communication, enhancing self-esteem and conflict resolution, and developing assertiveness and social skills. Specific groups addressing eating and body image concerns and groups for non-traditional students are also offered.

Short-term individual counseling is also available to address a variety of students’ concerns including uncertainty about a major or career path. Counseling for more severe emotional or psychological problems is available, and students can be referred to Student Health Services for consultation with a psychiatrist.

An emergency crisis counselor is always available at SCS. During business hours you can walk in or call; after business hours call our main number (309) 438-3655 and you will immediately be put in contact with the crisis counselor. SCS also maintains confidential advisors for incidents of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking. Talking with SCS does not result in a report being filed with the university, and it can assist you in exploring reporting options and available resources and support.
