Life as a student can be difficult, especially the cost of going to school. Micah Zavacky, a current Master of Fine Arts student, was able to offset this cost through the support from the Friends of the Arts (FOA). Micah talks about how he used the funds from FOA to make creative works below:

“The support from the Friends of the Arts helped me in obvious ways such as being able to purchase supplies, and cover any costs relating to the workshop. However, most importantly it gave me peace of mind and freedom. This support gave me the time to focus entirely on my work for which I am very grateful.

A Week Outside: During and After

In October of 2015, I was able to take a workshop with renowned landscape painter Lois Dodd. The goal, to use the pressures of change to help reveal overlooked threads in my work. After painting in an unfamiliar landscape, I was able to become more aware of the sensations and experiences that shaped my works. The highlight, a huge storm cloud passing over me on the beach at night, forcing me to work with haste, terror, and amazement.

Will the work be exhibited?

It will be exhibited at Richland Community College in the spring, after I work out some logistics.

How did the grant help me to achieve my goals?

Most importantly, the grant from the Friends of the Arts gave me the opportunity to embark on a mini art adventure. The most valuable thing I gained from the time with Lois in Truro was insight. Many questions about my studio practice that bewildered me became less foggy. Also, I was forced to be diligent in an unfamiliar place. I think the experience helped me focus, and realize that I have an amazing opportunity to mold my future into whatever I want it to be – and understanding what direction I want that to be.

How did the FOA grant help?

The grant helped me in obvious ways such as being able to purchase supplies and cover costs relating to the workshop, however, most importantly it gave me peace of mind and freedom. I was able to paint an entire week en plein air without worrying about finances, logistics, or other matters. This grant gave me the time to focus entirely on my work for which I am very grateful.
