Grannies from across the ocean will combine for one concert that spans two continents.

Granny Rock 2016 will live stream a concert from The Finnish Grannies that includes their United States counterparts, who live in Bloomington-Normal. The Finnish Grannies will give a concert in Finland, with the U.S. Grannies Band joining in via large-screen monitors.

The event is free and will be streamed from Resonaari in Helsinki, Finland, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, at www.rockhubs.com.

Kim McCord of Illinois State’s School of Music created the U.S. Grannies Band to give her music education students a chance to work with senior women. She based it on the popular Finnish Grannies, a group of senior women between the ages of 65 to 84 who had lost their spouses. The Grannies play by a system called Figure Notes, which uses colors and shapes to teach music.
