Cory Culbertson, Engineering and Technology Faculty Associate at University High School, is currently contributing to a book on incorporating engineering content into secondary life science curricula. It’s an extension of a National Science Foundation Discovery Research K-12 grant project studying techniques for professional development in engineering for science teachers.

The book is intended for practicing teachers, and will include perspectives on engineering in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), some techniques for management and assessment of engineering lessons, and five or six complete model lessons across the NGSS disciplinary core ideas in life sciences. The draft is due to National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) press by summer 2017.

Culbertson’s main role on this project is as an engineering advisor/editor. He has been helping to provide engineering-related professional development to the writers of the model lessons, and he’s part of the editing team that is revising those lessons after field testing. In addition, Mr. Culbertson is also scheduled to write the chapter on managing engineering activities in the classroom.
