Illinois State University’s hometown is one of the Top 10 college towns in the U.S., according to a new study.

Our hometown ranks No. 10 in the new research, which analyzes communities based on their quality of life, economic health, and demographics. Bloomington-Normal ranked No. 10 among college towns (smallest metro areas) in the American Institute for Economic Research’s 2017 College Destinations Index.

Bloomington-Normal’s many arts and entertainment venues were cited as one reason for its high ranking, as was the community’s overall low unemployment. The community is “is a hub of activity,” serving as corporate headquarters for State Farm Insurance, COUNTRY Financial, and other employers.

Illinois State is adjacent to Uptown Normal, a thriving business district that’s home to two hotels, an art-house movie theater, shops, and restaurants. The campus is also steps away from Uptown Station, offering easy access to Amtrak trains to Chicago and St. Louis, as well as Bloomington-Normal’s award-winning Connect Transit bus system.

Bloomington-Normal was also recognized by the American Institute for Economic Research last year as one of the top destinations for young college graduates.
