The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) at Illinois State University is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! This series, CAST 50×50, is designed to highlight 50 faculty, staff, students, alumni, and organizations within CAST that make the college special. These notable people will tell you that every day in CAST is a great day to be a Redbird!

Renewable energy? #CAST50 is a big fan! We continue our 50th anniversary celebration with Tyler Brown, a senior football player and renewable energy major.

What is your major, and what year are you at ISU?

I am a currently a senior and have a double major in renewable energy major and geography.

You are a student-athlete so your schedule is obviously crazy. Can you give us an idea of what it is like?

I would say that in season my daily routine I more hectic than it is out of season. Usually wake up and go get a morning lift in. After that I try to eat breakfast or at least have something I can take to class. After class is over, I hope to have time for a quick nap, which I usually make time for. Then I go to meetings before practice starts. This allows me (and my teammates) to get a rundown of how the previous day went and then get prepared for that upcoming practice. Following meetings, practice lasts for about two hours. Once practice is over I go and eat dinner, and then do any schoolwork that needs to be completed. I finally get to relax before I head to bed.

What is your favorite activity to do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?

My favorite activity to do in my spare time is actually just relaxing on the couch and watching TV or Netflix. I also enjoy fishing, when I actually get the chance to do that. Fishing is probably one of the thing I could do all day and never get bored with it.

You’re traveling anywhere in the world. Where would you go and why?

If I were traveling anywhere, I would probably try to go to Denmark or Sweden. They seem like really cool countries to visit. Also, both countries are very big into renewable energies, so I may be able to start a career there.

What is your favorite part about being a renewable energy major? Why did you choose this and what are your ultimate career goals?

I think my favorite thing about being a renewable energy major is the fact that I’m going to be doing something good for the environment. Knowing that our world will rely on renewable energy production in the future more than the current and prominent fossil fuels gives me a positive outlook for my future career. My ultimate career goals would be to own my own green roofing business that incorporates solar panels. I think this is something that is becoming more popular especially within the city because with more people becoming environmentally conscious the need for more green space is becoming a larger necessity. Providing green space on top of unused areas helps both the city and the environment.
