Diverse students and alumni have the opportunity to connect with one another at the Student and Alumni Diversity Meet-up on Thursday, March 2, from 5–6:30 p.m. at the Hancock Stadium Club. Small groups of alumni and students discuss how to effectively transition from college to career.

The Diversity Meet-up is a program hosted by the Career Center through the Cultural Career Network (CCN). CCN provides students of diverse backgrounds with career resources and connections to organizations with diversity initiatives and/or people who can help them prepare for the workplace. At the event students meet with those who have gone before them in the job market, discover how alumni got started in their careers, conducted their job search, and navigated the workplace; ultimately allowing students to better prepare for their career.

As a highly interactive program, students get the inside scoop on how to effectively transition from college to career from those who have already done so. In the comfortable, interactive environment, students will rotate among alumni to ask more in-depth questions and learn from their experiences. In addition, students have an opportunity to network with alumni who may be interested in serving as mentors to help them be successful as they start their careers.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for students of diverse backgrounds to meet alumni professionals in a very relaxed and supportive atmosphere,” said Career Center Director Pamela Cooper. “Not only will they get to hear about the career experiences of Redbird professionals, but they’ll get career advice firsthand from those who have gone before them, and start building a network of professionals for their own career success.”

Alumni participation

The Career Center seeks alumni interested in giving back to Illinois State by sharing their career story and advice at this event, and other CCN programs. Interested alumni can contact the Career Center to volunteer.
