Professor of Anthropology Rebecca Gearhart Mafazy of Illinois Wesleyan University will give a talk titled “Swahili Permutations: Music, Dance and Identity in Kenya’s Lamu Islands” at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the University Club in the Faculty/Staff Commons of the Bone Student Center.

Mafazy has had extensive experience living and working in East Africa. She will discuss changing notions of cultural identity among the Swahili peoples of the northern Kenya coast by looking at three music and dance (ngoma) traditions as case studies.

All faculty, staff, annuitants, and guests are welcome to attend in a very informal and relaxed atmosphere from 3:30-5:30 p.m. In addition, snacks and liquid refreshments are available.

Additional information about University Club events and activities can be found on the website. Continued program support is provided by the Office of the Provost and the Office of the President.
