Honors
Several Illinois State University faculty and staff are among those nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. Dawn Beichner, CJS; Olivia Butts, KNR; Stacey Hardin, SED; Kim McCord, MUS; Julie Navickas, COM; Katie Pratt, University College; Aslihan Spaulding, AGR; and Maura Toro-Morn, SOC. The winners will be announced May 16.

Karyl Carlson, MUS, was elected to begin a term as the American Choral Directors Association Central Division President-Elect (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio) starting in July.

Ani Yazedjian, FCS, was elected vice president-elect of the Council of Administrators in Family and Consumer Sciences.

Tom Marko’s, MUS, album of original music, “Inner Light,” that also features Kevin Hart, MUS, reached number 63 on Jazzweek’s 13-week jazz album chart.

Presentations
Stewart Winger, HIS, joined Christopher Phillips in a discussion of Phillips’s new book, The Rivers Ran Backwards, The Civil War and the Remaking of the American Border, which won the Ohio Academy of History Book Prize for 2016. The panel was held at their annual meeting at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Several faculty members of Politics and Government presented at the 2017 Midwest Political Science Association annual meeting in Chicago. Meghan Leonard presented a co-authored paper “Gender and Opinion Assignment on State Supreme Courts.” Kerri Milita presented “Helicopter Parenting and the Decline of Political Ambition.” Carl Palmer presented two papers titled “Come to the Dark Side:  The ‘Dark Triad,’ Participation, and Nascent Ambition” and “Political Implications of Perceived Partisan Biases in the Classroom.” T.Y. Wang presented “Political Cleavage and Electoral Decision: A Comparative Analysis of Korea and Taiwan” and L.J. Zigerell is the author of “Is Racial Resentment a Useful Measure?”

Bob Broad, ENG, published “Value Hunger: Feeding the Need for Assessment in Poetry” in the Birmingham Poetry Review.
