With a Major but Little-Noticed Move, New York City Signals That Learning Starts at Birth Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans last month to extend pre-K to 3-year-olds, a massive expansion of his popular Pre-K for All program. But a little-noticed element of the proposal could be just as significant: He called for the Department of Education to take over programs that reach children as young as six weeks old. Advancing the Illinois Early Childhood Education Workforce: A Model College and Career Pathway (IERC 2017-3) by Stephanie Bernoteit (IBHE), Janet Holt (IERC), and Amber Kirchhoff (IERC consultant). This policy report, published by the IERC in partnership with IBHE describes a new pathway model for early childhood educator preparation in Illinois, the rationale for its development, and, concludes with recommendations for Illinois policymakers and state agencies, as well as for higher education institutions to continue to develop and advance the early childhood workforce in Illinois.
Preschool Leadership Qualifications New America released a report, “A Tale of Two Pre-K Leaders: How State Policies for Center Directors and Principals Leading Pre-K Programs Differ and Why They Shouldn’t,” which looks across the U.S. assessing the diversity and inconsistencies among education leadership requirements.
Funds for preschool and child care The National Council of State Legislatures reported on early findings on state appropriations for early childhood programs-including that many states use TANF funds for child care and that some states are using CCDBG funds for preschool.
