Illinois State University Mennonite College of Nursing (MCN) is the recipient of a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support developing diversity in the nursing workforce.

The four-year Nursing Workforce Diversity grant, distributed through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), will allow $500,000 each year toward recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups to the nursing profession, as well as leadership development throughout the educational experience.

“This grant will support students with the training and development needed to become outstanding nursing leaders,” said Dean of the Mennonite College of Nursing Judy Neubrander. “In these challenging economic times, this grant will help MCN continue its mission of developing exceptionally well prepared nurses. This was a highly competitive grant where only 25 were awarded in the nation. This recognizes MCN’s ongoing excellence.”

The purpose of the HRSA’s Nursing Workforce Diversity grants is to increase nursing education opportunities for individuals who are from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities that are underrepresented among registered nurses.

“I also want to thank our hard working faculty who not only wrote the grant, but will also implement the program,” said Neubrander.
