Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Engagement through Active Learning and Formative Assessment
Facilitator: Terry Husband, School of Teaching and Learning
Monday, July 17 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Research shows that millennial college students prefer to learn in classroom environments that are hands-on, discussion based, technology enriched, and active in nature. It’s a dramatically different approach than what we, as students, probably experienced. In this workshop, you’ll examine the benefits of using active learning strategies as opposed to traditional teaching methods. You’ll identify a wide range of active learning strategies and examples of how these strategies might be incorporated into your classes. You’ll also explore a wide range of traditional and digital formative assessment tools that might be used in the classroom. A stipend is available for eligible participants. Registration is required.

OneDrive: Getting Started
Tuesday, July 18 • 10 to 11 a.m.

Take your projects on the go using Microsoft Office apps for iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices through OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud-based storage, free for members of the campus community. Learn how to share documents through OneDrive and discuss how to use this service within the boundaries of Illinois State data security policies and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Bring your smartphone or tablet with you to get the most out of this workshop. Registration is required.

Motivate All Students
Wednesday, July 19 • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Motivation is a key factor in helping students to learn. Very little, if any, learning takes place if students don’t have a reason to engage with course material. A further challenge: There’s not one method of motivation that works with all students, all the time. This workshop will look at a variety of motivational theories and explore how they can be used to inspire our diverse community of learners. A stipend is available for eligible participants. Lunch is provided. Registration is required.

Photoshop: Exploring Advanced Tools
Wednesday, July 19 • 1 to 4 p.m.

Get an overview of the work flow of creating a single complex (but not too complex!) image. See how a number of tools interact to create a single finished work. Registration is required.

Excel: Level 2
Thursday, July 20 • 1 to 4 p.m.

This course continues the basics of creating and modifying charts that began in Excel: Level 1. Also explore useful tools like filtering, which make viewing data accessible at a glance, and pivot tables to summarize values. Registration is required.
